RESULTS
We had a number of people travel to Apex for the Miller Memorial tournament. For the large strong A2 open foil event, Thoren Davis went 0-5 in the pools and lost his first DE to finish 30th. Walter Davis was 1-4 and lost his DE to finish 25th. Joel Ertzberger followed a similar path to finish 24th. All the DEs were losses to As and Bs. Patrick Gadow was 4-2 in his pool and won his first DE before losing the second to finish 13th.
For the even stronger and larger A2 open epee Brendan McConville was 4-1 in the pool, earned a bye in the first round and lost a close 2nd round DE to finish 18th. Patrick was 4-2 in the pool, also earned a first round bye, and won his first fenced DE. He then lost to the eventual silver medalist and finished twelfth.
In the final event, a D and under foil, Thoren was 1-3 in his pool, lost his DE and finished 12th. Walter was 3-1 in his pool, won his first DE, but lost his second to finish 6th overall. However, they based the medals on gender and Walter therefore won one of the men’s bronze medals. Good fencing by everyone in one of the nastier events in the area.
IMPORTANT DEADLINES
The deadline for the Absolute All-American and Academic All-American is June 2nd (Tuesday). Here is a link to the applications:
CLUB UPDATES
Basic summer practice schedule starts this week. The main practices stay on Tuesday and Thursday night, practices most Saturdays. I will be in at 10 am this Saturday and then we can decide if that is too early or just right. Last summer it seemed that the foilists came in early and the epeeists showed up closer to noon. The last beginner class for the academic year will end in about two weeks. Currently I have some lessons late Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
No one responded to my question about a McDougal, but we should try to have one soon.
ARMORING CLINIC
There seems to be some interest in an armoring clinic, so Herman is looking at setting one up this summer. We would probably have Kathy Walters come in. Kathy is (was?) the person who represents the US at International Armorer meetings and also is one of the people they send to International events to oversee the international armorers. Let Herman or me know if you are interested and some dates that might be good. We already have about half a dozen people who have expressed an interest.
