Cape Fear Fencing Association: Supporting a Diverse Community of Fencers

Established in 1997, the Cape Fear Fencing Association is a USFA-sanctioned club open to all individuals with an interest in the art and skill of fencing regardless of age, ability or experience level.

We offer group and individual instruction in fencing fundamentals and tactics, with both beginning and advanced classes in foil, epee and sabre. Private lessons are also available.

Fencer getting a touch

Humble Beginnings

The club was started by four guys who loved fencing but had no place to fence. After an exhaustive search for a place to call their own, they settled at what is now Ironclad Brewery.

Numbers steadily grew, with more fencers showing up daily. Without enough equipment to accommodate everyone, two of the founders maxed out their credit cards to outfit what had become the beginnings of a true fencing club. It wasn’t long before their space was too small, and the club moved to Tileston Gym on the campus of St. Mary’s Catholic School in historic Wilmington in 2001.

Supporting Local Fencing

Cape Fear Fencing Association help support fencing in the Cape Fear region through many avenues. In addition to offering classes at our main Wilmington location, the club also hosts four one-week fencing camps each summer. With homeschool and afterschool programs, CFFA is well equipped to support multiple teams for North Carolina Middle School Fencing League, the North Carolina High School Fencing League, and North Carolina Homeschool Fencing League. In addition, the club supports UNC Wilmington Wellness Activity Classes and the UNC Wilmington Fencing Club.

Honors

Cape Fear Fencing Association is proud of its members’ many accomplishments, including numerous state championships in the high school and homeschool leagues, as well as the Southeastern Fencing Association College Club Championships. We have had many champions at the Powerade State Games and State Amateur Competitions. With about 50 National Medals, 4 World Champion appearances, and 2 World Champion medals, Cape Fear Fencing Association is honored to be the home club for so many talented fencers.
