CFFA update for September 12

CFFA update for September 12
We had three people attend the ROC (A large regional qualifier for Nationals) in Fredericksburg over the weekend.  We have our first ROC swordist? (They gave katanas, not medals).  Oliver Galbraith started a bit slowly then got it together in the DEs to end up 8th in the Div. 1-A foil.  Not only does that get him the sword but it also means he is already qualified for the Div. 1-A foil and and Div II at next summer’s Nationals.  The rest of you are behind schedule.  On Sunday he won his first two DEs to end up 32nd in the Div 1-A epee, which was an A-4.  Rikki Richards fenced in both epee events, ending up in the top half of the Div II.  Samantha Milewski fenced both epee events on the women’s side and finished 13th in Div. II.
I don’t know what happened at Chapel Hill as the results are not up on askfred.  If any one who was there wants to fill me in, it would be appreciated.  If we had any notable results, I will let you know.
Beginning
afterschool fencing classes will start today, September 12th, at
3:30 pm (and tomorrow as well). The September evening beginner class will start at
6:30 pm.  Both of these will run 6 weeks with the fencers
attending twice per week.  Class cost is $50 plus USA Fencing dues.
Otherwise, it should be kicking into our normal seasonal week of practice.  The UNCW fencers will start showing up on Wednesday evenings this week.  There are a lot of new fencers, but also a number of epeeists and foilists with previous experience.  It might be worth the look for our experienced fencers.  The afterschool program for the experienced returning fencers looks like Monday and Wednesday will be more foil and epee, Tuesday and Thursday will be more foil and sabre.
There will be practice at Camp Lejeune Friday night.  I just found out about the floor refinishing at Wallace Creek.  It will have an impact on practice.  Once I know the dates I will pass that on.

Our
first event of the year will be on next Saturday, September 17th, with open foil, epee,
and E and under sabre.  Please get signed up now on askfred.  The more
of our fencers are signed up early, the more likely
it is that out of town fencers will show up and add to the ratings.
Currently, we have very few fencers signed up in each event.  We don’t
appear to have any other events on that date, so if we can show that we
have a good event, our turn out will be better.
If every one waits to sign up, the out of town people will make other
plans.  Right now, epee just needs bodies to be a B, foil needs bodies and some D fencers to be a C, and the sabre looks like it will be a shoot out for someone to earn an E.

September 24th has U19 and unrated sabre events at Mid-South.  Check askfred for more info.

Our first
under 12 event will be held on that Saturday (24th) as well.  Foil at 10
am, sabre at 1:30 pm, epee at 3:30 pm.  Trophies to the top three
place; medals to top three fencers 9 and under who don’t win
a trophy.  Yearlong sword awards to the top boy and girl, plus the
person voted as showing the best sportsmanship. Entry fee $5.  Will has
aged out, so the guy’s division is wide open.  Donny says he will be sending students down, but cannot attend due to work.  If that is going to happen, volunteer referees greatly needed (for foil).

Sunday the 25th is foil and sabre at NCFDP.  Details on askfred.  Foil is already an A, sabre should end up as an A.

October 1 is an RYC in Richmond, check askfred if interested.

Also on
October 1, there will be doing a referee clinic for potential NCFL referees
at RTF in Durham.  More details as it comes together.

October 2 has the epee and foil competition at NCFDP.  Both will probably end up as A events.
October 8th is Salle New Bern’s Joseph Cadole Memorial event.  It will be an unsanctioned E foil and and an unsanctioned Y-12 event.  I will give the appropriate sword points for any of our Y-12 foilists who want to go.  Let me know so I can make certain you have equipment.

pax vobiscum,
