Lots to talk about.
Yesterday was the NCFL individual championships held in Elkin.  We were represented by Oliver Galbraith, technically fencing for Coastal Christian.  This tournament is done in an older fashion.  You fence in a pool, then they cut down to a certain number of fencers, and you fence them in another pool, down to the final pool of 6.  Whoever wins the last pool, regardless of how they did previously, wins the event.  Oliver was undefeated until the final pool and ended up finishing second out of 45 fencers who started the event.  We were represented on the women’s side by Reaghan Juelke.  I think Reaghan was the only 8th grader there.  She went 2-3 in her pool and finished 21st out of 33.   Here is an explanation of how big tournaments work that will be helpful to those who want to compete at National or other events.  They often have a format where they eliminate people after the first round.  Most local events take everyone up into the DE, but many of these large events cut to only the top 80%.  Yesterday’s event was much rougher, cutting to the top 18 out of 33, or just over 50%.  Reaghan was in a pool of 6 and went 2-3.  There were three pools of 6 and three pools of 5.  What gets you in to the next round is winning percentage.  Reaghan was 2-3, for 40%.  The people who won 2 in the pool of 5 were 2-2, or 50%.  All the girls who won 2 in the pools of 5 made the 2nd round.  None of the girls in the pools of 6 who won 2 did.  Just one of those bad breaks and something to remember for your National events.
Those
of you who want to attend the NAC in Richmond in April, remember that, tomorrow, February 29th is the last day to enter before the triple fees.  Vets and
Div III, primarily.  Here are the people I saw as being entered as CFFA members:  Samantha Milewski  Div III epee, Robert Thomas  Vet 40 epee, Vet epee, Scott Butler  Vet 40 epee, Vet epee,  Herman Smith  Vet 60 men’s epee, Vet epee, Erica Julien Vet 70 epee, Vet 70 sabre, Vet epee, Vet saber.  VET team epee  Herman, Scott, Paul Perkins   Granted there is still a day to go, but the entries look really light.  Only 5 in Vet 40 men’s sabre – Erik?  Only 6 in Vet 70 Women’s epee  Edith?  Only 21 in Vet 40 epee  Paul?  For all you Us, Es, and Ds; the Div III events are very light.  ME 51, MF 38, MS 34, WE 37. WF 37, WS 38.  This is important because by regulation DIV III NACs are automatically C3 tournaments.  That means they would normally have to have 64 entrants with a large number of Ds (24).  The top 4 finishers get Cs, so here is a solid shot at a higher rating if you think you are ready.  Let me know if you enter.
Our next evening class will start on March 1st (Tuesday) at 6:30 pm. Otherwise it should be a regular week of practice, barring weather.
People wanting equipment, particularly for the NAC, should get the order to Herman or me by March 3rd.

Our
next event will be the Lynn Krupey Memorial Iron Maiden on March 5th. 
It is the only all women’s event held in North Carolina and has all
three weapons.  Many of our women are already signed up, but a few are
not.  I believe some of the UNCW women will be jumping in, plus maybe we can draw a homeschooler or two, so hopefully we can push the numbers up a little.  See askfred for details.  We will also be hosting the homeschool A
team championship on that date at about 11:00 am.  Just three teams, Forsyth County, Oak Ridge, and our people fencing as the Southeastern Cardinals.
The next set of homeschool classes will begin on Wednesday, March 9th.
If we could, I would like to have an armory night on Thursday, March 10th.  You can repair your own gear or help us get the club gear ready for the onslaught of youth fencers on Saturday.
Our
first youth event of this semester will be on Saturday March 12th. 
Apologies for not getting the date set earlier, but a number of other
tournaments have been moving dates due to weather, etc.  Hopefully this
one can stick.  These events are for fencers 12 and under and cost $5
per event.  We give trophies to the top 3 places, fencing usually has a
tie for 3rd.  We also give medals to the top 3 fencers who are 9 and
under who don’t win a trophy.  There are swords to the top girl and boy
in our season long point competition, plus a sword awarded to the person
voted the best sport by the other fencers.  Cost per event is $5.  Foil
is at 10 am, sabre at 1:30 pm, and epee at 3:30 pm.  As always,
volunteer refereeing help is very welcome, as foil could be pretty large.  The other two youth events
this semester should be on April 23rd, and May 21st.
For adults on that Saturday, there is a mixed epee in Charlotte that looks to be a B event.
The next set of Camp Lejeune classes should start on Friday the 18th.
March 19th is the Homeschool individual championships, probably in Oak Ridge.
April 1-3 is the Ned Light RYC at Mid-South.  This is for fencers from 8-14 in various age groupings and is the next level up for those who want to advance beyond our local youth tournaments.  You will need a full set of gear, knickers, underarm protector, etc.  We will let you borrow club gear if we have the correct sizing.  Let me know if you are interested.
I
am trying to plan ahead for the Advanced camps this summer.  Advanced
merely means that you have advanced beyond beginner.  I am trying to
determine numbers and the level of the fencers so I can target the camps
more precisely.  Right now there are no advanced sabre fenders, so I might fold that back into the advanced epee camp, like we had done before.  That would allow me to offer a second week of a beginner camp instead.  Please let me know about fencers who would like to
attend, ASAP.  Thanks.

A lot happening fencingwise over the weekend.  On Saturday the Coastal Christian men’s team (Oliver Galbraith, Mack Smith, Jonathan Hartness) took 4th in the NCFL’s state team championships.
On Sunday, the Southeastern Cardinals (Philip Nazzaro, Kyler Schoonmaker, Isabelle Artz, Caroline Artz) took first in the last homeschool meet of the season.  They defeated the Oak Ridge Mustangs 45-41 and the Forsyth County Hawks 37-29.
Also on Sunday, we had a number of fencers attend the tournament at Mid-South.  Robert Thomas finished in the top half of an A2 epee event, and Alex Hoelscher finished in the top half of a B2 sabre event.
Practice this week will be back to normal.  Everything will be meeting, the UNCW fencers should be in Wednesday night, and there will be practice at Lejeune on Friday night.
Saturday should be the NCFL team championships.  Tentatively it is scheduled for Elkin, but that may change depending on the state basketball tournament.
Also
on the 27th is an unsanctioned youth foil tournament in Fayetteville. 
Starts at 10 am and has separate divisions for 7-9, and 10-12.  On
Sunday they are having adult unsanctioned foil events.  Details on
askfred.

On Monday, Samantha Milewski made the cut into the DEs, but lost her first DE.  She finished 144th.  Another former CFFA fencer from Jacksonville, Shelby Brooks, also made the DE and lost her first bout.
The beginner class has decided to stay together and will be in tonight at 6:30 pm to fence.  Any of our other younger foilists that would like to show up would be welcome.
The Mid-South epee event on Sunday is up to 25, making it a B2.  If Andrew Fullmer’s A from JOs goes through, it will be an A2. 
For those interested in the April NAC, Vet’s and Div III, the last day to enter before the fees go up is February 29.

We had three fencers compete yesterday at the JOS in lovely downtown Cleveland.  Samantha Milewski went 2-4 in her pool, but lost her first DE and finished 132/181.  Oliver Galbraith went 1-5 and finished tied for 194 of 243.  He missed moving into the second round by a couple of touches. Connor McCormick was 0-6 and finished 228.  Former CFFA fencer, Riley Hart, was 1-5 and finished 159, not making it into the DEs.

This should show people how hard these National Tournaments are.  Samantha had 3 As in her 7 person pool.  Connor is a D and was the lowest rated person in his pool.  These are not the kind of events you can practice for once a week and hope to do well at.  If you want to be prepared for these events it takes lots of home footwork practice, fencing at least a couple of times a week, working with the coach or other fencers on drills, and doing competitions outside of our own so you have seen a number of different styles.

No practice Monday due to President’s Day and the fact that I will still be in Cleveland as Samantha has another event.  Everything should be back to normal for the rest of the week.

February 20th is Mid-South’s Grand Opening anniversary event.  Lots of sabre on Saturday and Open foil and epee on Sunday.  The epee needs one more A to be an A2 event.  The foil needs a B for a B1.  The sabre needs a B for a B1.  Further info on askfred.

The 20th will be the NCFL’s High School A team championships at Kestrel.  The 27th is the NCFL’s individual championships.  Location as yet undecided, but possible Elkin.

The final regular season homeschool meet is being rescheduled.  They are looking at Sunday, February 21st.

Also on the 27th is an unsanctioned youth foil tournament in Fayetteville.  Starts at 10 am and has separate divisions for 7-9, and 10-12.  On Sunday they are having adult unsanctioned foil events.  Details on askfred.

Results from the NCFL meet held yesterday at Kestrel Heights.  Coastal Christian was represented in the A league by Oliver Galbraith, Jonathan Harkins, and Mack Smith.  They went 3-1 on the day.  Harry Shaheen and Will Golder fenced shorthanded for CFFA in the B league.  They went undefeated anyway, beating Chapel Hill, Thales Academy, and 3 Kestrel teams.
This week, February classes continue and January classes end up.  The UNCW fencers will start coming down on Wednesday nights as of this week.  I
will be away with fencers at the Junior Olympics in Cleveland over the
President’s Day weekend.  No fencing at Camp Lejeune this Friday (12th),
and no afterschool or evening classes on Monday (15th).
This Saturday, February 13th, the Salle New Bern club will host a walk through foil fencing tournament.  This is meant as a training experience for someone who has not yet done a fencing event or maybe just one or two.  They will walk you through the event, explain all the things competitors have to do, how who fences whom is determined, and all the other things that are good to know (for both fencers and parents).  You should have fenced electrically at least once.  If you are interested, sign up on askfred.net.  You will need mask, glove, jacket, weapons, lame, cords, and a plastron (underarm protector).  We can provide those things, just ask.  You should also wear sneakers and long pants or sweat pants, if you don’t have fencing knickers.  For those in Jacksonville, whom I won’t see before Saturday, Donny, Salle New Bern’s coach, assures me they should have equipment to lend.  Sign up and let me know you are going so I can give Donny some idea of your sizes.  They intend to split the competitors by age groups, so teenagers and adults won’t be fencing the little ones.  The cost is only $5 and as this is not going to be an official tournament, you don’t need to have a competitive membership.  Feel free to ask me questions if you are interested.

February

Lots of fencing across the area this weekend.  A CFFA team of Reaghan Juelke, Harry Shaheen, and Will Golder went undefeated at the NCFL meet at Kestrel.  They defeated teams from Kestrel, Orange County, and Thales Academy.
Josh Harvey and Oliver Galbraith went to the Hangover in Richmond.  Josh was 7th in the open epee (a B2).  Oliver was 12th in the epee and 10th in a B1 foil.
I believe UNCW sent fencers to a meet at ECU, but I haven’t heard any results.
Later today the next set of afterschool and evening adult class will start in Wilmington.  No Wednesday evening fencing as UNCW is staying on campus this week.

Saturday,
February 6th will be an NCFL meet if a location is found.  Orange County is being spoken of as a possibility.

I
will be away with fencers at the Junior Olympics in Cleveland over the
President’s Day weekend.  No fencing at Camp Lejeune that Friday (12th),
and no afterschool on Monday (15th).  The UNCW folks will start coming in on Wednesday (17th), so we will be back to our regular schedule at that point.

February

We had a solid, and truthfully named, Old Man Winter event in Wilmington yesterday.  The foil was a bit small.  First was taken by Jesse Harvey of CFFA with Skylar McKoy of The Wilmington Fencing Club claiming second.  Max Davis of CFFA and Josh White of Salle New Bern tied for 3rd.  CFFA swept the open epee medals.  Josh Harvey won, but contrary to his belief, only updates to a B16, not 17.  (perhaps if we hold a Back to the Future tournament?).  Brendan McConville pushed him, but settled for second.  Herman Smith and Jesse Harvey tied for third.  All three of them upgrade to C16s.  In the Vet event, Paul Perkins took gold, Robert Thomas took silver, Herman took another bronze, and Robert Mones of Edge of America Fencing was the only non CFFA person to medal.  Thanks to everyone who helped with the event.
The homeschool meet scheduled for yesterday was postponed due to weather to a date as yet undecided.
January
30th is the next NCFL regular season meet at Kestrel.  Let me know if you
want to go.  Remember, if you want to fence the individual championship
in February, you must have fenced two team events.

On
January 30th, Charlotte Fencing Academy is holding a women’s epee and a
mixed epee event, with a U foil event the next day.  Check askfred.net for
specifics.

Yesterday’s NCFL meet could not find a venue and has been postponed to February 6th.
The Milewski girls attended the Capitol Clash up by Washington, DC, yesterday.  Nicole went 3-2 in the first round of the Y-12 epee.  She won her first 2 DE matches before losing to a girl who had beaten her in the pool.  She finished 16th, earned National points and qualifies for the National Championships later this year in Dallas.  Samantha, in the cadet epee, went 5-1 in the first round, only losing to the top ranked fencer.  She got a bye, won her first DE, and then lost to a C from Illinois.  She finished 10th and also earned National points.
No afterschool Monday as it is MLK day and St. Mary’s has off.  Additionally, they are supposed to be putting in new pipes downstairs.  I have been told that it will only take the one day.  However, I will go in early Tuesday and try to let people know if we cannot have practice.
UNCW will be meeting on campus for the first few Wednesdays of the semester.  I will let everyone know when they start coming down to the club.
There will be practice on board Camp Lejeune this Friday.

January
23rd is our Old Man Winter event.  We need 3 bodies to bring the epee
up to a B and the Open foil and Vet epee can all use more people.  Get
signed up on askfred.

The 23rd is also the next homeschool meet and I will make certain they are outfitted if we send a team to Oak Ridge.

Our homeschool team went up to their 2nd meet of the year in Oak Ridge yesterday.  We fence as the Southeastern Cardinals in the homeschool league and our team was Philip Nazzaro, Kyler Schoonmaker, and Isabelle Artz, with Caroline Artz as our sub.  They are younger and smaller than almost all of their competition.  They did very well in this team meet, which is fenced in the Olympic relay fashion.  In their first meet against the Oak Ridge homeschoolers they lost 39-45.  In their other meet, they defeated the team from Forsyth county 45-42.  Congratulations to all of them.
Still swinging back into normalcy with practice this week.  Afterschool and Tu/Th evening practices will be as usual. 
The homeschool class this week will start its next beginner class on Wednesday.  Help get the word out.
No Wednesday evening practice as the UNCW club isn’t up and running yet.
No practice at Camp Lejeune this Friday: we will resume next Friday, the 22nd.
There is an NCFL meet next Saturday.  The location isn’t certain, but Orange County middle school is being mentioned.  We should have one B team and I will keep everyone updated.  For younger fencers, it also the Capitol Clash, an SYC in the DC area.
No afterschool next Monday as it is MLK day and St. Mary’s has off.
January 23rd is our Old Man Winter event.  We need 3 bodies to bring the epee up to a B and the Open foil and Vet epee can all use more people.  Get signed up on askfred.
The 23rd is also the next homeschool meet and I will make certain they are outfitted.
January 30 is the last NCFL regular season meet at Kestrel.  Let me know if you want to go.  Remember, if you want to fence the individual championship in February, you must have fenced two team events.
February 1st should be the next set of afterschool and evening adult class starts.
Saturday, February 6th is the final homeschool regular season meet in Oak Ridge.
Looking
down the road for summer camps, I would like to use July 11-15 for
beginners.  I don’t have any preference for July 18-22, July 25-29, or
August 1-5 for any particular weapon, so people should let me know if a
week doesn’t work for someone.  So far no one has expressed a preference.
It is that time of year when I will start pruning the e-mail list.  If you want to be removed, please let me know.  If you have been on hiatus from fencing, but want to stay connected, please let me know that as well.
