IMPORTANT DEADLINES

The last big local event of the year will be on May 30 at Apex.  We have some people in the Open Foil and D and under foil, but they both need more bodies to be more than E events.  The Open epee is already an A event (without any Clicks!) and would probably be the last good tune up before Nationals.  Registration closes May 24th.

The deadline for the Absolute All-American and Academic All-American is June 2nd.  Here is a link to the applications:

CLUB UPDATES

Should be a standard week of practice this week.  The last week of practices for afterschool and homeschool will be the week after Memorial Day (so May 28 will be the last day for any of these.)  It looks like we can do a Saturday practice this week if there is interest.  Regular summer Saturday practices should start May 30.

I hope to do another 12 and under event on May 23rd. It will have foil at 10 am and epee at 2 pm.  We give trophies to the top 4 competitors overall, medals to the top 3 nine and under competitors (if they don’t win a trophy), and swords to the season long point winners.  Hopefully, as we will have some eligible people who will graduate their beginner classes in the next couple of weeks, these should be a bit larger.  Volunteer referees would be very welcome.

 

ARMORING CLINIC

There seems to be some interest in an armoring clinic, so Herman is looking at setting one up this summer.  We would probably have Kathy Walters come in.  Kathy is (was?) the person who represents the US at International Armorer meetings and also is one of the people they send to International events to oversee the international armorers.  Let Herman or me know if you are interested and some dates that might be good.

RESULTS

We had a few people travel to Richmond for the NAC and a few former members as well.  Herman Smith competed in the Vet 70  and up epee.  He went 2-4 in his pool and fought a close DE, losing 7-10, to finish 23rd.  Nicole Milewski, was in the Division I epee.  She was 3-3 in her pool, with one of her victories avenging her loss in the finals of the ACC tournament.  She lost her first DE 12-15 and finished 87th.  Jackson Jones fenced in today’s Junior epee, going 1-5 in his pool and just missing the cut for the DEs, finishing 215th.

For the former CFFA people, Keely Carter was 3-3 in Junior sabre, and won her first DE before bowing out to finish 109th.  Kim Phillips took the Bronze in the Vet 50 sabre.  Erica Julien took gold in all three weapons in the 80+ category.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

The deadline for entering the Summer Nationals at the regular fees is May 6th.  The regular fees (tournament fee, event fee, and administrative fee) total $225 for one event, $320 for two, etc.  After May 6th the fees triple, so $675 for one, $960 for two, etc.  Let me know if you are going so I can make plans, the only person I see at the moment is Brendan.

Just a reminder that I will be away Thursday evening (Afterschool will still meet) to help our athletes at the NAC (North American Cup) in Richmond.

Although this is not as attractive an opportunity as it was before gas prices shot up, I would still tell everyone to consider a trip up to see the NAC.  Hopefully many of you want to compete at National events in the future and the first time you walk into one of these you will almost be certainly hit by the OMG factor.  Imagine 90 – 100 strips of fencing, hundreds of fencers milling around, and an overall crowd in the thousands.  Better to see that as a spectator then to be dealing with it your first time on the National stage.  If you do decide to travel up, let me know when you would be going and if I am not helping one of our fencers at that point, I can try to show you around.  This may be the closest one of these events will be to Wilmington for a while.

Another reason to attend is that most, if not all, of the big fencing equipment manufacturers will be there.  You can compare prices, maybe see products that a certain manufacturer has that are exclusive to their brand, and save on shipping.  If you go and see something you like, talk with Herman or me before buying as we have club deals with more than just Absolute.  If you want us to pick up something or look for something, contact Herman or me and we can look for it.  (The sooner you contact us, the better.)

On a different front, Marek Stepien, the coach at Hargrave Military Academy, has organized a high-level epee camp at the Academy for this summer.  The date is July 31 – August 9 and he is bringing in a number of international level instructors, including the coach of the last Olympic gold medalist.  It is a touch pricy, $1650, but I believe that includes the room and board for your time at the camp.  (I am assuming it is through the Academy’s housing and food service.)  Let me know if you want more information.

Finally, the schedule for the first few NACs of next season is up and it is not horrible for us.  Unfortunately, with the exception of JO’s, the events have not been listed yet.  The October NAC will be in Orlando, Florida, October 9-12.  November’s NAC will be in Columbus, Ohio, from the 10th to the 13th.  The JO’s (Cadet and Junior Championships) are listed for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, January 8-11.  It is also listed as a NAC so there will be other events, probably a set of Div 1s.

RESULTS

We had a number of our people compete in the Stab-a-thon yesterday.  Starting with the opening open foil, Ivey Stewart was 0-4 in his pool but won his first DE before losing to the eventual winner to finish 16th.  Nora Reber went 1-4, got a first round bye, then lost her DE to finish 14th.  Thoren Davis was also 1-4 in his pool, received a bye, then lost to Gerhard Guevarra, the coach of All-American in Fayetteville, and finished 12th.  Walter Davis was 2-3, earned a bye, but then ran into Joel Ertzberger, to finish 10th.  Joel was 3-2 in his pool, defeated Walter, but then lost to Patrick Gadow, to finish 7th.  Patrick was a perfect 5-0 in pools, earned a bye, then won 3 DEs. before losing in the finals.  Patrick finished 2nd and re-earned his E.  Overall, the event was won by David Hadler of All-American, with Patrick 2nd, and Gerhard tied for 3rd with Julian Telles, also of All-American, who earned his E26.

The open epee saw Ryan O’Dea win one and lose four in the pool.  He lost his first DE to Jackson Jones and finished 20th.  Patrick went 2-3 in the pool, won his first DE but lost the second to finish 15th.  Robert Thomas also was 2-3, won his first DE but lost a close 14-15 second DE to finish 14th.  Jackson, still fencing on a broken toe, was 2-2 in the pool, won his first DE over Ryan but lost the second to finish 13th.  Jacob Malone of Charlotte Fencing Academy took one 3rd and re-earned his C.  The other medalists were all from Apex.  Sam Han nabbed the other 3rd, and Tristan Click defeated brother Aiden to take 1st place.

The nightcap was a D and under epee, with a bunch of CFFA fencers involved.  Lindsey Wagner was 2-3 in her pool, received a bye, but lost her first DE to finish 12th.  Herman Smith was 3-2 in his pool, got a bye only to run into Robert Thomas and finish 9th.  Robert, also 3-2 for pools, beat Herman but lost his next DE to finish 8th.  Kenyatta Sanford, another 3-2 pool person, received a first DE bye, won her first DE, but then lost to one of the bronze medalists.  Iron Man Patrick Gadow, the only person to compete in all three events, was 4-1 in his pool, earned a bye, then won his first DE before losing to Ryan O’Dea.  Ryan had a 3-2 pool, drew a bye, won his first DE, defeated Patrick, then won two 15-14 bouts to win the gold and re-earn his D.  Tallis Russell of Apex took silver and re-earned his E.  Shaurya Singh of Triple Threat and Sullivan Uria of Apex won the bronzes.

Results for a couple of CFFA adjacent fencers….  Erica Julien fought in the Open Epee, went 0-4, lost her first DE and finished 22nd.  She was 2-3 in the D and under pool, lost her DE, and finished 13th.  Isabella Fernandes of UNCW, in her first ever competition, got touches on almost everyone in a 0-5 pool and lost her first DE to finish 18th.  Congratulations to everyone.

Zemi Lawrence ran the event. Mike Nicholson, Donny Zelinski, Brendan McConville, Jayden Vergara, and Josh White refereed.  Mike Kinney, James Perkins, Herman Smith, and Josh White armored.  Thanks to everyone who helped with the pre-event cleaning, set up, and tear down of the fencing room.

RESULTS

We had a number of fencers attend Salle New Bern’s Skirmish at Tryon Palace yesterday. It was a beautiful day to hold this outdoor event on the grounds of the Colonial Governor’s mansion.  Interesting A2 event in that a couple of the better fencers were injured and a U fencer earned his B.  (He would have earned his A except for a red card.)  Kenyatta Sanford got the bad luck of being in the pool with the eventual winner (A – Aiden Click) and the person who went from U to B (2nd place finisher, Gregory Howard).  She went 1-4, lost her first DE to the C who finished 8th, and finished 24th.  Nora Reber went 1-3 in her pool but ran into our Ryan O’Dea in her first DE and finished 20th.  Ryan was 3-2 in his pool, defeated Nora, but then ran into Stephen Kmiec, who finished 3rd and earned his way back to a B.  Ryan finished 13th.  Robert Thomas was also 3-2 in his pool, won his first DE, but then ran into Aiden and finished 11th.  Patrick Gadow was 4-1 in his pool, only losing to an A, Tristan Click.  He won his first DE but then lost to the same C who took out Kenyatta in a close 13 – 15 bout.  Patrick finished 9th and went from being a U to a D26.  Jackson Jones (fencing on a broken toe) was 4-1 in his pool, and James Russell was 5-0 in his.  Jackson won his first two DEs, while James got a first round bye, and won his first DE.  That placed them against each other in the round of 8, with James coming out ahead.  Jackson finished 7th.  The weirdness of this event was that the two B rated teammates fenced in the round of 8 and the two A rated teammates, the Click brothers, also met in the round of 8.  That meant that the top 4 rated fencers all ended up in the same half of the table.  Aiden defeated James on his way to the title.  James earned the 3rd place trophy and re-upped his B to a B26.  Congratulations to everyone.

ABSOLUTE HIGH SCHOOL ALL-AMERICAN and ALL-ACADEMIC  AWARDS

The self-nomination process for the Absolute Fencing High School All-American and All-Academic awards is open from now until June 2nd.  To be eligible, you must be a USA Fencing member and in High School grades 9-12 (Homeschool counts).  For the All-American status there are three levels:  First team – to be first team All-American you must have earned or re-earned an A or B in the 2025-2026 season (there are some other possible criteria such as placement at NACs, world events, etc.).  For second team honors you must have earned or re-earned a C or D.  For honorable mention you must have earned or re-earned an E.  For the All-Academic team, first team status is awarded for those with a 3.85 and above GPA, so long as you are in the top 25% of your class.  For the second team, your GPA must be between 3.4 – 3.84.  There are four scholarships available (one $4,000 and one $1,000 scholarship each for a male and a female) by also submitting an essay.  There is a $35 application fee (each), so be certain you meet the criteria.

Donny Zelinski’s club (Salle New Bern) has scheduled their outdoor epee for April 11th at the Tryon Palace in New Bern.  It is currently a 34 person A2 and they have spots for up to 42 people.  It is always a fun event, and I recommend that all of our adult epeeists get entered.  If necessary, we may be able to set up carpools.  Registration closes TODAY, April 5th.

This week is St, Mary’s Spring Break (April 6-10), so no afterschool.  Other classes and lessons should all be as usual.

RESULTS

We held the Lynn Krupey Memorial Iron Maiden yesterday.  For the foil, Kenyatta Sanford was 1-3 in her pool, lost her first DE and finished 13th.  Nora Reber followed the same path and finished 10th.  Jaden Vergara of Greensboro won the event and her D26.

Rebecca Rothman of Research Triangle was second and earned her E26.  Yara Ibrahim tied for 3rd and re-earned her E26 tying with Hannah Joseph, both of Apex.  

For epee, Lindsey Wagner went 2-6, lost her first DE and finished 9th.  Christi Golder was 3-5, lost the first DE to finish 6th.  Kenyatta was a perfect 8-0 and won all her DEs to take home the crown, sword, and stuffed animal.  Sophia Nolan of Apex won second, with Ava Azad of Apex and Lillian Ragsdale of Forge taking the thirds.  

Ending in sabre, Lindsey was 2-3 in the pool and won her first DE to take one of the bronzes.  Irina Vihodet of Foothills Fencing won the other bronze.  Anita Miller-Sackman of North Florida Fencing won the silver.  Kenyatta was 3-2 in the pool, but swept the DEs, to take the gold and re-earn her sabre E26.

The NCCA regionals were held at Haverford yesterday.  They do this in the old school way of pools to the very end.  The first round cuts it to 30 fencers.  They then do five pools of six to cut to eighteen, then three pools of six to cut to a final pool of twelve.  Your finish is based on where you finish in the final pool in which you fence.  In epee, Nicole Milewski (UNC-Chapel Hill) came out first in the opening round, but didn’t make it to the third round.  Keely Carter (Temple – sabre) made it to the third round but then took a medical withdrawal.  I don’t know what for, but hopefully nothing serious.

 

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

The Divisional II/III and Y14 National Qualifiers are now up on askfred.  Even though the Nationals are in Portland, this should be a good event to attend.  The event is March 21-22, and registration closes on March 15.  The events are still pretty sparse except for the Div II Men’s foil, which needs another body to be a C event, and Div II Men’s epee, which already is a C event.

The Bull City Regional is open for registration.  However, it has some smallish registration caps.  Most of the epee events are already waitlisted.  There are spaces in the other weapons, but you should get entered if you are interested.  It will be held April 4-5 in Raleigh.

Donny Zelinski’s club (Salle New Bern) has scheduled their outdoor epee for April 11th at the Tryon Palace in New Bern.  It is currently a 23 person A1 and they have spots for up to 42 people.  It is always a fun event and I recommend that all of our adult epeeists get entered.  If necessary we may be able to set up carpools.

 

CLUB UPDATES

Standard week of practice this week. The next homeschool beginner class will start on Wednesday, March 11.  

I hope to do one 12 and under event, but the season is so booked that it looks like it will be only one, sometime in May.

 

SUMMER CAMPS

From the feedback I have received, it looks like the first and third weeks will be the advanced foil and epee camps.  Which will be which depends on what further info I get.  That leaves the second and fourth weeks to be at least one beginner camp, and maybe a second beginner camp, or some advanced camp.
