Southeast Sports Festival

Well here is how it went for me on Saturday (day one) of the fencing events.

I was the only E rated fencer in the open foil event (although there were 6 or 7 U fencers inh\the event), why is this important? It is important because that automatically put me in the pool with the highest rated fencer (Boo!!Hiss!!). That fencer was none other than Julio Diaz who is a great guy, but I would have prefered to not be in his pool. Anyhow I finished the pool 3 wins and 2 losses (and no I did not beat Julio [but I only lost 4-5]). I came out overall 15th out of 26 fencers, which was not bad considering the competition. I won my first DE, and got ther honor of facing Julio in the second DE (I did get some points [3 I think]). Thus I finished 15th overall.

Now to the second event, the Div III Foil event. I faired quite a bit better, and came out of the pool 4 wins 1 loss. This put me in 4th overall. I won my first DE with a little trouble, due to the youth and energy of my opponent. I faced a fencers from my pool (who I defeted there) in the second DE, and had a 6 point lead before he even scored in the DE. Unfortunately he was determined to make a comback (and did make an impressive one), which lead to the final score being 15-14 my win. This got me into the semi-finals, where I faced a tough young opponent. While doing my best I had my right arm and leg cramp up at the same time. The best that I could manage was a 5-15 loss. I got a bronze medal for my efforts though.

I'll be going back tomorrow for the Epee events (open and Div III).

Re: Southeast Sports Festival

Robert,

Congrats.  And of course, more water, gatorade, bananas, and electrolyte laden stuff for today.  It should be a bit easier without the lame, but as you have already established a deficit condition you need to get back ahead on hydration.

Good luck!

Re: Southeast Sports Festival

......Now onto the second day.

First off I added orange juice (great for potassium) to my regiment plan of gatorade from the previous days fencing. I think that the lulls in the action (competition, cooling down, competition [not good]) were the biggest culprit to my Saturday physical woes.

In the open epee event I had a miserable showing with only 1 win and 4 losses (two were 4-5 bouts). That placed me into the 19th seed facing the 14th seed in the first DE. I started well and maintained a 2 point lead through to the middle of the 2nd engagement. In the animated exchande that followed the lead changed hands, ending with a 14-15 loss for me. I subsequently finished 19th overall.

In the Div III (D&Under) epee event I finished the pool 4-2, and came out 4th seed overall. I had a moderate bout in the first round of DE's, but won without too much difficulty. In my second DE I faced a fencer that I had bouted with twice previously in the day (both losses [4-5 & 3-5]). I managed to finally defeat him 15-14 in that round. In the semi-finals I got an early lead, but could not control the action well enough to keep it in the end. This ended my day with a 12-15 loss. I finished high enough to earn a bronze medal, and see my last opponent lose to a young lefty in the finals. lol

The end of the finals match was a sight to see. With only about 1 minute 25 seconds left the lefty was down 8 POINTS and managed to tie the match up in the last 3 seconds to go into sudden death. The lefty got priority, and the match was on again. With a heated exchance, the lefty made the point to take first place.

SCORE TWO BRONZE MEDALS FOR ME!!!!!!! big_smile

I think you are right by saying that as you have already established a deficit condition you need to get back ahead on hydration. So, if I were you I should always drink a water even that is purified or not.
